Backstory

There are a lot of wallets out there but none of them were what we wanted. From this need created a desire to make something better. The wallet had to be small so you won't notice it in your pocket but still big enough to hold the essentials. SkunX used his engineering background to make the perfect minimalist wallet. This full grain leather is vegetable tanned by skilled artisans in Tuscany, Italy. With it's rich aroma, this leather is a material seemingly from a different era. You'll know it when you see it, feel it, and smell it.

What is Full Grain Leather?

Full grain leather is considered the highest quality leather money can buy. It’s made from the very top layer of the grain where the fibers are most dense. This makes it the most durable and water resistant of all forms of leather. Because the surface of the leather hasn’t been altered, the natural grain, scars, insect bites and even brands are visible. The result is a very natural looking material that tells the story of the animal it came from. Too many scars and blemishes are undesirable so we had to hand pick the highest quality hides to be made into full grain leather. Full grain leather will look better over time and use as the patina is naturally developed. It will give you that classic look everyone wants in leather.

What is Vegetable Tanning?

It’s the most traditional way of tanning hides but less than 10% of all leather is made this way today. Most of the process is done by hand. Chrome tanning is usually done in 7-8 hours while vegetable tanning can take up to 40 days to produce a single piece of dyed leather. Vegetable tanning uses natural ingredients such as fruits, oak bark and sometimes even small tree branches to tan the leather. This means the finished color has warm rich tones of natural browns but can also be done darker. Vegetable tanning is usually done by tanneries that have a rich heritage of tanning hides, like the ones we source our leather from in Italy. The byproduct is not hard on the environment like chrome tanning is.

The reason vegetable tanning is so rare today is because it requires a high level of expertise and is more expensive. The masses want cheap and don’t care about how long a product will last. Our leather is very durable and has a life expectancy of over 40 years if properly cared for. Even when the stitching goes out, you can take it to a boutique and they can restore it for you. No more buying a new bag every few years.
