Vegetable tanning can take up 40 days to produce a single piece of dyed leather while chrome tanning is usually done in 7-8 hours. Vegetable tanning uses natural ingredients such as fruits, oak bark and sometimes even small tree branches to tan the leather. This means the finished color has warm rich tones of natural browns but can also be done darker. Vegetable tanning is usually done by tanneries that have a rich heritage of tanning hides like the ones we source our leather from in Italy. The byproduct is not hard on the environment like chrome tanning is.
